TIP leads the effort for Pakistan to become 79th ‘Member Nation’ of ITA
Dir TIP headed the PTTS delegate to represent Pakistan in WTC 2023 in Athens where Pakistan was accorded status of ‘Member Nation’. The delegate actively participated in different activities including participation in different working groups and poster presentations by TIP representatives Ajdar Nawaz and Haris Waheed. Prospects of collaborations with different participants including institutes, tunneling societies and software developers were discussed and contacts established for future.

AMBASSADOR OF AUSTRIA AND POLITICAL COMMISSIONER OF USA VISIT TO TIP
Ambassador of Austria, Her Excellency Mrs Andrea Wicke and Political Commissioner of US Embassy Ms Mellissa Vonhinken visited TIP on 4 May 2023. Roles and functioning of the Facility was explained during through a walking through brief. Later, possibilities of research collaboration through student exchange programs and Internship opportunities to young engineers/ geologists on tunneling projects in Austria and USA were discussed. Honorable guests appreciated the efforts of TIP and PTTS towards promotion of the tunneling profession in Pakistan and assured support for all potential collaboration.
AMBASSADOR OF JAPAN AND HIGH COMMISSIONER OF CANADA VISIT TO TIP
Ambassador of Japan His Excellency Wada Mitsohiru and High Commissioner of Canada Her Excellency Leslie Scanlon visited TIP on 27th Apr 2023. The worthy guests were received by President PTTS, Engr. Kamal Azfar, and Dir TIP, Dr Abdul Qudoos Khan. The ambassadors were apprised about the organization and function of TIP during a walk through brief. Collaboration with Tunneling Societies of both the countries Research collaboration through student/ faculty exchange programs with universities offering tunneling education were discussed. Both the honorable guests appreciated the concept and assured support for all potential collaborations.
Federal Minister for Communications, Mr Asad Mehmood's visit to Tunnelling Institute of Pakistan (TIP) at Islamabad
Mr Asad Mahmood, Federal Minister for Communications, Captain Muhammad Khurram Agha (Retired), Chairman NHA and senior officials of NHA visited TIP on 24 March 2023. They were received by Chairman TIP Board of Directors. The Minister was given walking brief of the facility and detailed presentation about the Institute and its facilities for promoting tunnelling profession in the country.
The Minister underscored the need for such initiatives for developing better understanding of scholars and practitioners in the tunnelling industry of Pakistan. He appreciated efforts of the Institute, encouraged the members to participate more vigorously in tunnelling projects in the country and also assured full support of the Ministry of Communications for TIP’s capacity building.
DANISH AMBASSADAR VISIT TO TUNNELING INSTITUTE OF PAKISTAN (TIP) & PAKISTAN TUNNELING AND TRENCHLESS SOCIETY (PTTS)
Danish Ambassador, H.E Jakob Linulf along with Head of Trade Council Mr. Aslam Pervaiz visited TIP and PTTS, Islamabad on 4th April 2023. Respected guests were received by Patron in Chief PTTS, President PTTS & Director TIP.
The Ambassador was given awalking brief about the institute and its facilities. Later, objectives of the Institute and PTTS and the efforts being carried out for the promotion of tunneling technology in Pakistan were discussed in detail. H.E Jakob Linulf appreciated the efforts of TIP and PTTS towards their objectives and ensured his full support for collaborations with Danish counterparts in Tunneling.
BAKAERT REPRESENTATIVE VISITS TUNNELING INSTITUTE OF PAKISTAN
Mr. Mehmet Yerilkaya, Technical Manager and Mr. Apler Uluis, Sales Manager from BEKAERT visited TIP on 21st March 2023 and delivered a very useful talk on “Use of Steel Fibres in shotcrete and lining concrete”. A group of professionals from the construction industry and academia attended the seminar. An open discussion on the use of steel fibres in tunneling as well as on other facets of construction followed the seminar.
Our esteemed guest’ appreciated the efforts of Tunneling Institute and the PTTS towards promotion of tunneling profession. BEKAERT now stands among the distinguished members of PTTS.
Concrete mix Design & Sand Analysis Sika App
A one day workshop on concrete mix design and sand analysis application conducted by SIKA at TIP, material Engineers from different projects and material testing labs were invited to participate in the event. Mr. Kashif Ashfaq introduces Sika application which can digitalize characterize sand and aggregates by scanning material based on the scan results, this app can suggest concrete mix design along with dosage of different admixtures as per use design/project requirements.
President ITA Prof. Arnold Dix visits to TIP
Prof. Arnold Dix, President ITA, visited TIP on 7th and 8th Dec 2022. He was briefed about the facility in detail and efforts being carried out by the Tunneling institute and the PTTS to promote tunneling practices in Pakistan. He delivered a talk on “Sustainable Infrastructure” to professionals from material manufacturers, construction industry, academia and representatives from regulatory authorities (PEC, Planning Commission etc). Prof Arnold also met with the executive committee of PTTS and exchanged views on importance of underground space utilization. Prof. Arnold Dix appreciated the effort of TIP and PTTS for the promotion of tunneling as a profession and assured full support from ITA.
Tunnel Talk on Soft Ground Tunneling
Dr. Oscar Marazzini from SIKA international having 26 Years of tunneling experience along with professionals from TIP delivered a One-day seminar on “Soft Ground Tunneling”.
Session was held as part of the “Tunnel Talk” series being hosted regularly by TIP and PTTS. Mechanical means of excavation, TBM’s for soft ground and monitoring techniques were discussed in detail. The event was attended by more than 100 participants including online participants.
